We are offering a range of entry to senior level volunteer opportunities. All roles are remote.


Who we are

now-u is a new non-profit app, launched in July 2020, with a mission to inform, involve and inspire people to help tackle some of the world’s most pressing environmental and social problems. In these unprecedented times, we cannot ‘go back to normal’. The now-u app facilitates ways for people to do good that are easy, enjoyable, and make a real difference to people, communities and the planet. This April, our campaign is Supporting victims of the Ukraine crisis.

Volunteering with us will give you an opportunity to provide really important support to a new project that we hope could really make a positive difference in the world. You would also become part of a small friendly volunteer team who would love to work collaboratively on any other ideas you may have regarding the app.

MANAGEMENT & STRATEGY



Outreach Director

Level: Mid-Entry

Availability: 8-10 hours a week


Do you possess the talent to shape our outreach function?  We are looking for an experienced partnerships professional with business development experience preferably within the charitable sector. 


Your role would be to guide and support the overall outreach team providing strategic direction to the activities as well as practical guidance for team members. It requires some managerial experience, but could also be a development opportunity for the right individual. You will have overall responsibility for forming strong relationships with Charity and Education Partners alongside developing now-u’s fundraising activity principally through Crowdfunding and Grants. 


Working with the Head of Charity Partnerships, Head of Education Outreach and Head of Fundraising, you would be responsible for the overall team activities including maintaining outreach processes. You would also attend management meetings and liaise with other senior managers within now-u to ensure good cross-organisational working. 


Essential:  Partnerships, management and fundraising experience 

Desirable:  business development and working in the charity sector experience




CAMPAIGNS


Co-Head of Campaigns

Level: Entry/Mid

Availability: 5-6 hours per week


We are seeking an organised and motivated individual with a passion for charitable causes to jointly lead our Campaigns team. 

The Campaigns team is responsible for curating all the core content available on the now-u app. Campaign content includes learning materials, actions and charitable campaigns, designed to inform people about social and environmental issues, to inspire them to get more involved with these causes and to facilitate taking charitable action.


You would initially cover for the  current Head of Campaigns who will be on leave until mid-2022 and then jointly lead. You would be responsible for a  team of 5-10 talented Campaign Researchers, working in an agile environment, running weekly sprint meetings and managing their work. As Co-Head you will also help shape our content strategy going forward, with the aim of engaging more people in impactful charitable action, and contribute to wider company strategy, liaising regularly with the other department leads. 


Your key responsibilities will  include:

  • Running weekly sprint meetings
  • Guiding the Campaigns team in the regular curation of new content
  • Creating a Campaigns calendar, incorporating the suggestions of charity partners
  • Attending weekly meetings with the department leads to discuss progress and strategy

Essential: Campaigns research experience, managing a team



Campaign Researcher

Level:  Student, entry level

Availability:  5-6 hours per week


If you have talent in creating great campaign content, to drive, engage and inspire action, then our creative team needs you.

Your role would be to help research one of the social and environmental issues that we focus on in each set of campaigns, to contribute to our campaign proposals for charities and prepare campaign content for the app, website and social media

OUTREACH & PARTNERSHIPS


Fundraising Manager 

Level:  Mid

Availability: 10 hours a week


We are seeking an experienced senior fundraiser manager to lead in the development and delivery of our fundraising strategy. This is a new role where you would be instrumental in increasing our supporter base to provide us with an income to grow. The ideal person would bring leadership and management experience and have a track record in strategy development, budgets, working to target and KPIs.


Working independently you would develop a strategy to attract to corporate partners/sponsors, agree a departmental budget, work to achieve or exceed a fundraising target and lead funding applications. You would be responsible for setting up and managing a team to engage in fundraising activities, build relationships with charitable trusts, foundations and other institutional funders. You would prepare reports and give presentations on funding progress to the senior leadership team.


Essential: Proven track record in developing and delivering fundraising strategies, Knowledge of current fundraising guidelines and legislation, proven ability in producing effective, and inspiring proposals and funding reports




MARKETING


Head of Marketing and Communications

Level:  Mid

Availability: 10 hours a week


We are seeking an proactive individual who could holistically manage all communications, marketing and brand related activities for now-u. You would  leverage agile practices to lead a medium sized team to create and widely distribute outstanding content that engages our existing users,  attracts new users from targeted groups and builds our brand awareness.  The team’s work currently spans communications, marketing and creative production (copywriting, graphic design and video)


This is a great opportunity to use your expertise and knowledge to develop the marketing communication function and work closely with the leads of each of our sub-teams to guide our branding, marketing and communications strategy, and to manage the work of the team. You will work closely with the core strategy team to contribute ideas for wider company strategy.

CREATIVE


Video Producer Lead

Level: Entry-Mid

Availability: 5-6 hours per week


Do you have the skills to help with the creative strategy for our video production? We are seeking someone with a great eye for detail to work closely with the head of campaigns and head of marketing to ensure our videos are meeting our goals.


Your role would be to help us improve our current strategy, create video briefs, and review video edits so that it fits with our aims, branding and marketing strategy. You would also be responsible for managing the work our small video production team.


Essential: Mid level Video production and editing experience

Video Editor

Level: Entry 

Availability: 5-6 hours per week


Could you help us to create compelling video content? Our video producing team are seeking someone to help create short videos for our charitable campaigns. 


Your role would be to collect images and video footage from online sources and from our charity partners, and edit this material to create short videos that will be shared through our app and on social media. This will include searching for suitable music and adding it to the video. You will be in close communication with the copywriting teams.


Essential:  Video editing & production experience, Proficiency and access to Premiere Pro and/or Final Cut Pro.

Desirable:  Knowledge or interest in learning Adobe After Effects



Social media strategist 

Level: mid

Availability: 5-7 hours a week


We're looking for an experienced social media strategist with good knowledge of SEO, data-driven technical experience and excellent organisational skills. You will take ownership of building our online presence and cultivating a strong connection between our brand and consumers. Your ambition and creativity will help us reach even more users and to ultimately raise awareness of the causes we champion.

The role

  • Planning and executing social media strategy
  • Generate, publish and share engaging content on our social media channels that encourages the audience to take action.
  • Create and execute editorial calendar and schedules
  • Continuously improve by analysing the social media metrics, insights and practices to expand our fan base across all platforms
  • Coordinate with other departments for charity partners’ promotion.

Copywriter 

Level: Graduate-Entry

Availability: 5-10 hours a week


We are seeking a copywriter with strong creative writing skills and the ability to write engaging, emotive, persuasive copy.  If you have a passion for social justice causes and understand how to convey nuanced, well-researched written pieces then get in touch.

Your role will be to help fulfil now-u’s copywriting needs, including blogs, newsletter, press releases, app copy, campaign proposals, social media posts and much more. You would be working alongside our Lead Copywriter to complete suggested amends to work .


Desirable: Degree in a humanities/essay writing subject, marketing experience, diverse portfolio of written work



TECHNOLOGY


UX/UI Designer Lead (website and mobile app)

Level: Mid/Senior

Availability:  5 hours per week - minimum


We are looking for an experienced, self-motivated and highly efficient UX/UI Designer to lead the design of our website and mobile app and help us in our goal to increase the impact of our campaigns, that is the number of actions that our app users are taking to support charities and good causes.  Actions are taken on our mobile app, whereas our website drives our communication and is the main gateway to the app.

You would lead a team of 3 UX Designers (one working on the website and two on the mobile app), providing guidance and advice to ensure high-quality design. Your main responsibilities include – collaborating closely with the insight team and product manager to support high-level product strategy, serve as a design subject matter expert for the organisation, develop and deliver the UX/UI strategy across our website and mobile app, communicate progress from your team and present designs to the management team.  You would also oversee and/or conduct user research, solution/production ideation, journey mapping, wireframe development and usability testing.


Essential: UX/UI design experience, mobile app and web design, great communication skills with the ability to rapidly go from big-picture thinking to focusing on the details.


Desirable: Experience as a team leader


Software developer

Level: Mid

Availability: 5 hours per week


We are looking for keen, versatile and experienced software developers to join our app, website, DevOps or API team (DevOPs) to develop and maintain our app.


Working with our development team you will play an active and leading role in developing, testing and deploying our digital products.

Dev Ops Engineer

Level: mid-senior

Availability: 5-6 hours per week


We are looking for an experienced Dev Ops Engineer to assist now-u in reliably hosting its services. The role will involve both creating environments as well as managing them. The ultimate aim is to remove the friction now-u faces when releasing new versions and ensuring we have reliable pipelines (including testing) before releases.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Creating and managing staging and production environments for now-us services.
  • Creating reliable CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ensuring data is secure and reliably backed up.

Essential: docker, docker-compose, bash and github actions

Front end (react) developer

level: mid

Availability: 5-6 hours per week


We are looking for an experienced website developer to join our development team. Our goal is to increase the now-u brand through our website, drive users to download and use the mobile app, engage with our community through blogs. We have a roadmap full of exciting new features for you to build!


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building robust reusable React components for future use
  • Translating designs and wireframes into high-quality code
  • You and your team will be responsible for the entire development process, from prototyping to development and deployment
  • Build new features for the Now U Website
  • Participating in an agile software development team
  • Working closely with Product Owners to understand software requirements

Essential:

  • A solid background in React.js
  • in-depth knowledge and experience working with web technologies such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, TypeScript, C#, SASS, Stylus, Stylus, Python, and LESS.
  • 1 year experience in website development

Desirable: Having started/completed a website project with Showcase (eg on publicly on GitHub)



Ruby on Rails Developer 

Level: Mid

Availability: 6 hours per week


Our api development team are seeking an additional member who is familiar with Ruby on the Rails framework.  If that's you then we would welcome your valuable input and knowledge in supporting development and increasing the teams velocity.


Working under the guidance of the team lead you will work independently to complete agile tasks which includes writing clean, maintainable and efficient code, designing robust, scalable and secure features and contributing in all phases of the development lifecycle.


Essential: proven work experience as Ruby on the Rails developer and in software development.  Demonstrable knowledge of front-end technologies such as JavaScript, HMTL, CSS and JQuery


Flutter Developer

Level: mid/Senior

Availability: 5-6 hours per week


Our small development team are in need of a flutter developer to work with us on improving our app. If you have software development expertise and have worked on flutter projects then we would really value your precious skills

Working closely with the founder, you would build out and improve the existing now-u application.


Desirable:  proven experience of having started or completed a flutter project


UX/UI Designer (mobile app)

Level: Entry/Mid

Availability: minimum of 5 hours per week


We are looking for an experienced, self-motivated and creative individual with problem solving skills and a customer focused mindset who could bring some exciting ideas to our team to develop the design of our app. You’ll join 3 UX Designers, one working on our website and two on the mobile app, to support the Design Lead in our goal to increase the impact of our campaigns; that is the number of actions that our app users are taking to support charities and good causes.


Your role would be to design new functionalities and make improvements that help retain users of our app and make it easy and quick for them to take actions.  You’ll work autonomously but also recognise when to get advice and feedback from the rest of your team.  Responsibilities include – understanding and applying the recommendations from the insights team (based on user research, market  and competitive analysis), creating prototypes and wireframes, determining information architecture and creating sitemaps, working with the user research team to set up usability testing sessions.

UX/UI Designer (website)

Level: Mid

Availability: 5-6 hours per week


We are seeking an experienced UX Designer with a customer focused mindset to join our UX team and help with the design of our website.  Working alongside 3 UX Designers you would support the Design Lead in our goal to increase the impact of our campaigns, that is the number of actions that our app users are taking to support charities and good causes.  Actions are taken on our mobile app, whereas our website is the main gateway for our target audience to download the app.  


Your role would be to help in our plans to enable mobile app users to access their now-u account through the website, so your work would include a mix of improvements and creating new functionalities. You’ll work autonomously but also recognise when to get advice and feedback from the rest of your team. Your responsibilities include – Understanding and applying the recommendations from the insights team (based on user research, market competitive analysis), creating prototypes and wireframes, determining information architecture and create sitemaps, working with the user research team to set up usability testing sessions.

RESEARH AND INSIGHTS


UX Researcher

Level: Mid

Availability: 5-6 hours per week


Would you like the opportunity to work on a exciting projects and hone your user experience research skills? We are looking for someone to join our insights team to work on understanding our users experience on the app and advising the product team on what to build/improve on to increase user engagement and retention.


Your role would include helping to prepare our research e.g. creating research plans and participant guides, carrying out research (interviews, surveys, screencasts. A/B test, etc) and analyse findings.  You would also contribute to growing our insights capability by suggestion and trying new research methods and tools to help now-u better understand users’ needs.
